Summer is here and many of our friends are hitting the road in an RV. We kinda want to join them... but can we do it. Should we do it? Something is holding us back... it is the bathroom, right?
Our friends in RVs are visiting astonishing places and eating delicious food in new places. They are unwinding from the stress of the pandemic too!!!
Well, the LooM is going to cover some RV basics to help all of the newbies!
We’re here to provide you with the best tips for traveling alone or with the family in a rented RV this summer. Let’s get into it!
Know Your Destinations
Before even renting out an RV for a road trip, we should plan out our destinations. Doing so prevents us from delays, confusion, and having to guess where our next stop is in the middle of our trip.
This can be time-consuming and confusing at the same time. Knowing the route and stops in advance also helps us choose the type of vehicle we’re going to rent.
National and state parks are overflowing this summer, so make sure you can get in and have a place to park that bad boy! There are many choices, so also make a list of the things you want to see and do the most on your trip!
Choose the RV That Best Fits the Trip
Selecting the right vehicle for a trip depends on various factors, such as:
Budget
Comfort
Safety
Storage
Luxury
Drivability
Managing to secure a vehicle that fits our budget and has the right type of comfort, safety, and storage that we need is sure to make the trip an incredible one.
For those traveling with the whole household, it’s crucial to have a family-friendly vehicle. This means having enough space for kids to sleep and feel comfortable during the trip. Some people prefer class A vehicles because they have a huge windshield, allowing them to have a better view of the scenery while driving. There are usually plenty of family-friendly vehicles to choose from when renting.
It’s also important to check the cleanliness and functionality of the bathroom. The last thing we need is a toilet that smells bad because it can’t generate the right amount of water to flush, or not being able to wash our hands. Disgusting!
Fortunately, RV bathrooms tend to work in the same way as our bathrooms at home. The main difference is that they have their own sewer system that must be manually emptied. Be sure to check that everything is functioning before setting off!
Get a Campground Reservation
Who would want to miss out on camping during the summer? Before deciding which campground to visit, make sure to have a few options along the way.
It’s important to contact these sites in advance to ask about reservations. If some are fully booked or not ideal, you’ll still have other options.
Either way, based on USA Today, campground officials are encouraging campers to make reservations as soon as possible because many Americans are already securing their spots. Rolling up at the last minute without a reservation is not a good idea and may leave you with nowhere to stop overnight.
Here is a link to Reserve America's campground list!
Book in Advance
We always emphasize this point to beginners. Nothing will stop a trip as long as it’s all booked in advance.
The reality with rented vehicles for travel is that there is more demand than supply. It has been reported that the demand for RVs is continuously growing while the supply is going down. This is why booking months in advance gives us a higher chance of getting one for our trip. Start looking now if you’re planning to travel soon!
What to Bring
Here is a quick list of things you need to bring, but remember that space is limited and bringing too much might create some chaos and stress!
Bedding
Pillows
Towels for bathroom and kitchen
Disposal wipes/towels
Cleaning supplies
Sanitizer
Cookware
Trash bags
Dishes, mugs, glasses, silverware
Lanterns, flashlights, headlamps
Leveling jack if not included with RV
Heater or fans
Bug repellant
Laundry bags
Food and water
Speaker or music source
Smores!!!
The POOP Though?
Dumping sewage is part of it, but it is not that big of a deal. Not gonna lie, it is the thing I feared the most! It is pretty darn easy to dump the sewage in you RV tank! RVshare even made a list of dump stations which is linked here!
